Intervista con Casey Crescenzo (The Dear Hunter)

Perché scegliesti un nome così curioso come The Dear Hunter?

The Lake and the River.

ENGLISH VERSION

When and how was born The Dear Hunter Project?

The Dear Hunter was a name I used back in highschool for random music I would make… but The Dear Hunter as a serious project was born after I completed work on Between the Heart and the Synapse with TREOS in the winter of 2004. I was very inspired at the end of that record, and was visiting my parents for the holidays - but I was still so in the mode of making music that I locked up for a few weeks and made an album of demos. I brought that back with me and showed some friends with no real intent to make it into a serious band - but they started to circulate, and people started to give it attention. Once I was asked to leave the band, I turned to the dear hunter as my main focus, and recruited friends to flesh out a live band.

Why did you choose a name so curious like the Dear Hunter?

There is no real reason. In high school, it was cool to make a band name that was a play on words… I thought I was being cool… but I wasn’t.

What is your process of creating music?

The only thing I can compare it to is falling down a hill. When things get moving, I just have to move with them, and let the journey happen naturally, knowing that I will reach the bottom at some point. It is a little chaotic, and happens mostly in my mind - the hardest thing is eloquently explaining the ideas I have before they disappear.

I have noticed that on Migrant tour you have reinterpreted in a magnificent way some of your old songs such as City Escape and The Lake an the River. Can we hope that there will be a live album with songs from these concerts?

Unfortunately no. We didn’t have a system in place for live recording, but we are working towards it. Improvising from night to night, there are always wonderful things that happen in the moment - and it would be great to capture those moments and have them around in the case that we were asked to assemble a live recording.

The Color Spectrum and the last album Migrant are more “song oriented” compared to Act I-III. Will this be the musical future of the TDH or there will be new progressive rock influences?

I think that if you had asked this question after Act II, or after Act III, or the color spectrum, or now, the answer would always have been the same. There is not singular line this band is travelling. I have a deep interest in music, and music alone. Not a specific genre, or image, or positive review from a witty publication. I just want to make good music. At the time of writing The Color Spectrum, and Migrant, the only thing that dictated the style, scope, vibe, or theme of the record, was my passion at that moment in time. Thats the one thing that will always be present in the musical future of the band - music lead by my passion.

In relation to this matter, progressive rock elements in your music are chosen by you because you appreciate that genre or they are random, as an element of your writing?

They are just a natural element of my writing. I am not a big prog head - I don’t know the ins and outs of the prog world. I have plenty of progressive records I love, but its because they are amazing records - not because they are part of the prog world.

Apart from this, there are several other musical influences in your music which vary from rock of ‘60’s to country music.  Personally I believe that you redefined the genre of Americana music because your music is so complex and composite. What is you musical cultural “baggage”?

I don’t know if I am interpreting the question correctly, but are you asking for my inspirations? If so, my biggest influence is my parents - but after that, its The Beatles, Beach Boys, Bjork, Mr Bungle, Cardiacs, Hendrix, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Pedro the Lion, Doves, Elbow…
If I was misinterpreting the question, clarify and I would be happy to answer again… and also - thank you for the kind words :)

Compared to other groups which sometimes wait for three or four years before publishing an album (also because of financial matters), you are a very prolific artist. How do you manage to produce music with such frequency? Can you make a living with your musical carrier?

I just genuinely love writing, recording, and performing music. There is nothing in this world that brings me more fulfillment. I am so lucky to have this oppurtunity, and the last thing I want to do is take it for granted.

Do you think you will do a European tour sooner or later?

Most Definitely!

Many thanks to Casey for his kindness and for sharing his time with us.
